Making STEM hiring work for infrastructure employers

Written by Samantha Saunders, Resourcing Business Partner at Thames Water

Hiring in the STEM sector presents a real opportunity for infrastructure employers. The STEM skills shortage is a challenge, but it also gives employers a chance to rethink how they attract and grow talent in a way that meets candidates where they are.

Today’s candidates value adaptability, collaboration, curiosity, and hands-on problem solving, and infrastructure roles naturally offer the real-world impact and challenge they are looking for, so there is a real opportunity to make these roles more appealing.

Employers can stand out by offering faster, clearer hiring processes, flexible working solutions that actually work in operational environments, and visible development pathways. Small changes in these areas can make a big difference in a competitive market.

Hiring managers can make immediate gains by simplifying role requirements, focusing on potential over perfect experience, and modernising processes to keep candidates engaged. Moving away from outdated practices, like long, drawn-out interview stages, rigid job adverts, or searching for the so-called perfect candidate, opens the door to stronger, more diverse talent pools. Encouraging internal mobility and upskilling also builds teams that are resilient and ready for the future.

Through thinking differently, embracing simplicity, flexibility and potential-driven hiring, the infrastructure sector can turn a tight STEM market into a real advantage. Employers who modernise now will not only attract the talent they need, but also build engaged, resilient teams ready to deliver the infrastructure of tomorrow.

We’ve been exploring these topics in more depth through our book Girls in Engineering and in our podcasts, where we speak with industry experts about what’s working in STEM recruitment and how employers can make a real difference.
